Read the beginning

It was a rainy Tuesday morning, and Isla was eating jam on toast. Then the toaster went PING! And up popped... a letter. It was warm, and it smelled of toast, and on the front, in curly gold writing, it said: Isla.

"Dear Isla, Please come to the School of Wonder today. Bring a spoon. Jump in the biggest puddle you can find. Best wishes and biscuits, Miss Crumpet, Head Teacher." Isla tucked the letter into a raincoat pocket, took the jam spoon and ran outside. The biggest puddle in the street was waiting. One... two... three... SPLOSH!"Dear Isla, Please come to the School of Wonder today. Bring a spoon. Jump in the biggest puddle you can find. Best wishes and cookies, Miss Crumpet, Head Teacher." Isla tucked the letter into a raincoat pocket, took the jam spoon and ran outside. The biggest puddle in the street was waiting. One... two... three... SPLOSH!

But Isla didn't get wet at all. Down, down went Isla, onto a hill of soft white cloud. At the top stood the School of Wonder, with crooked towers, teapot chimneys and a jam-red door. On the step stood Miss Crumpet, a tiny lady with a teacup. "Ah, Isla! Did you bring a spoon?"

Isla held up the jam spoon. It was still a bit sticky. "Perfect," said Miss Crumpet, and she dipped it in her tea. The spoon began to glow like honey. "Say it with me," she said. "Twirl the spoon and stir the air, a little bit of magic... there!" Out popped a tiny gold star. "Splendid! Off to Class One!"
