On the morning Leo turned four, the sun was not the first one up. Something small and bright was already at the window. Tap. Tap. Tap-tap-tap.
Leo opened the window, and in tumbled a star. A little gold star with a big gold grin. "Happy birthday!" it said. "I'm Glim. I was lit the night you were born. I'm your star, and on your birthday I'm allowed to come down." Glim did a twirl. "Quick! Everyone is waiting!"
Waiting? Who could be waiting? Leo pulled on red wellies and ran after Glim into the garden. Every bird for miles sat in a row along the fence. They took one big breath, and they sang: Twinkle bright and twinkle high, a birthday star has left the sky! And that was only the garden.Waiting? Who could be waiting? Leo pulled on red rain boots and ran after Glim into the garden. Every bird for miles sat in a row along the fence. They took one big breath, and they sang: Twinkle bright and twinkle high, a birthday star has left the sky! And that was only the garden.
Down the lane, bees buzzed round a golden honeycomb. In the field, the sheep stood in the shape of a heart. One faced the wrong way. "All this for me?" asked Leo. "All for you," said Glim, scattering sparkles over them. Ping! Ping! Ping! "Just wait till you see the sea!"
