Shh. Are you asleep, Isla and Leo? It's me, Daddy. When the moon's riding high and the house has gone still, and the stars have crept out over chimney and hill, I tiptoe in softly, as soft as can be, for the moment you're dreaming, you're dreaming with me.

Close your eyes and drift away... I'll meet you where the dreamers play. There you are! Come and sit. Let me hold you up tight. I've been somewhere so magic, so far and so bright. Shall I tell you the wonderful things that I've seen? Snuggle down, and I'll tell you where all I have been.

I set sail on a sea that was sparkling with stars, in a little white boat, past the moon and past Mars. The fish glowed like lanterns. The moon leaned in near, and I whispered your name in her big silver ear.

Then a whale made of silver came up through the cloud, and she sang me a song that was gentle, not loud. I rode on her back over mountains of foam, and I told her about you, the whole journey home.

On the moon there's a town where the houses are light, little lanterns that glow in the deep of the night. They asked who I loved most of all, near or far, and I smiled, and I said... can you guess? Yes, you are!

In a forest where trees whisper secrets and sing, I found the most wonderful, magical thing: a tree that grows leaves made of glittering gold, a new leaf every time you are loved, so I'm told. And of all of the trees that the forest has grown, the tallest and brightest was yours, all your own.

I danced on a hill with the lights in the sky, in ribbons of green and of pink swirling by. They lent me a brush, and I painted it new, with a stripe of your favourite colour, for you.

I flew to an island where wishes all land, each one like a pebble of glittering sand. And there, shining brightest, I found one from you: a wish to see me. So I made it come true.

Then I climbed past the clouds to the top of the night, and I caught a small star, the most beautifully bright. I tucked it away in my pocket to keep, a present for you, for whenever you sleep.

I can't bring you with me, not over the sea, not up to the moon, or the star-picking tree. But you're there on each step of each journey I take, in my heart when I sleep, in my heart when I wake.

So tonight, take my hand. Hold it tight. Here we go! In our little white boat, on the star-sea below. We'll ride the great whale, and we'll wave to the moon, and you'll pick where we go. But the morning comes soon.

I have sailed through the stars, I have flown with the whales, I have danced with the lights where the bright ribbon trails. But of all the adventures, the best one I knew, the most magical one of them all, it was you. Being your Daddy is the best adventure there is.

When the sky turns to pink and the night slips away, wake up, and go have the most wonderful day. Be brave and be kind, and laugh loud, and then come and tell me it all, when you're dreaming again.

Close your eyes and drift away... I'll meet you where the dreamers play. And if ever you miss me, just look to the sky, at the star I caught for you, so bright and so high. It's my love, shining down, and it always will be, so you're never too far from my heart, or from me. Goodnight, my darlings. I love you, always. I'll see you in your dreams.
